It’s nearly December, and that means one thing – no, not Christmas, the BSH Custom Heroes stand at Motorcycle Live! at the NEC (4-12th Dec)!
After a gap in 2020 caused by the dreaded Covid-19, we return to Brum with, once again, one of the, if not the, best stands at Britain’s biggest (by far!) indoor motorcycle show. We have the cream of the best custom bikes in the land, including the six winners of the 2021 BSH Custom Bike Champs (whittled down from over 1,300 entries!), as well as not one, but two, incredible bikes from south coast chopper specialists Attitude Cycles (both of them cover bikes in the mag), a gloriously sparkly fat-wheeled Victory, and a so-Seventies-it-hurts C-cab trike the likes of which haven’t been seen in the UK for decades! And, on the morning of Sat 4th, at 11am, give or take a bit depending on hangovers, there’ll be the presentation of the awards for the Custom Champs.
As well as that we’ll be having demonstrations of the exquisite brass work of Chopper Ste’s Shine Shack, the amazing sculptures of Creative Metal by Tim, and the unbelievable paintwork of Gus Spence of Muddy Beach Customs – not to be missed!
Enjoy more Back Street Heros reading in the monthly magazine.

Chopper Ste’s Shine Shack: 4 – 6 December
Stephen Smith is the man behind Chopper Ste’s Shine Shack and he joins us on the Custom Heroes stand on the opening weekend of the show!
Ex- infantry soldier Steve from Richmond considers himself a parts guy and is now getting into building bikes too. He is totally self-taught and has been at this for around 3 years. Starting out with a polishing machine and a very small lathe, Steve started making small parts for his own bike and doing a bit of polishing for other people. It’s has taken off quite well and he’s clearly found his own style and way of doing things!
Steve is also an engraver and is developing this skill along with acid etching – both of which you’ll be able to see live at the show!
Steve believes in using hand tools as much as possible to allow training for the eye and hand faster than using machines would. He makes various things, such as foot pegs, points, covers, and has made brake levers, oil tank plugs, foot pegs, number plates, brake lights and a lot of other bits using brass too. An area of speciality is mixing brass and aluminium to make pegs and oil tank plugs.
Above all, Steve loves what he does and intends to continue developing and learning his craft. As all true craftsmen agree, Steve is proud to have skills like this to rely on and he loves the fact that all his creations look hand made. He’s a true artist and a true Custom Hero and we’re really chuffed to have him on board this December at Motorcycle Live.

Creative Metal by Tim: 7 – 9 December
Based in Cheshire, Tim is no stranger on the custom bike scene in the UK, having created many an iconic build over the years. Tim turned his exceptional design and welding skills to create metal sculptures from anything and everything metal. This ranged from cute little robot lamps; savage looking Angular fish; intricate roses; anatomical hearts; the most spectacular sharks; horses and a life size dolphin. An 8ft high dolphin was commissioned to rise from the dock at Cal Mac’s Lochmaddy port in the Hebrides. It is a stunning piece of work, especially silhouetted against the Milky Way.
Tim’s attention to detail is second to none. This may stem from spending 30 years as a senior nurse, observing life in it’s many stages. He certainly doesn’t miss a trick. All of this passion is turned into wonderful pieces of art, lovingly created, reasonably priced and unique.
Challenge him, you won’t be disappointed. We’re delighted that he’s joining us for the second stint at Custom Heroes, please make sure you go over and admire his incredible work!

Muddy Beach Customs: 10 – 12 December
Our second Custom Hero for 2021 is Gus Spence from Muddy Beach Customs. Appearing live on the stand from Friday 10th December – Sunday 12th December, Gus will be bringing his kit to wow us with his airbrushing skills for the show’s finale!
It’s been thirty years since Gus first demolished and vandalised his first motorbike… and since then he’s never been able to leave anything the way it is, or anybody else’s stuff for that matter.
During this time he’s airbrushed everything from half sized guitars to speed boats, and from crash helmets to artic lorries. This has been a self taught hobby, however in 2009 he studied a course in Photorealism with Europe’s finest.
More than a hobby, airbrush painting is his passion, and he has perfected various techniques over the years. His work has won awards all over Europe, and been featured in both car and motorbike magazines.
We’re pleased to have Gus on board for the weekend – make sure you visit the stand and check out his incredible skills!
