NEWS: Happy 120th To The Motorbike!

120 years ago the first production motorcycle came into being. Germany company Hildebrand & Wolfmüller have the honour of being credited with the creation of the ‘Motorrad’ back in 1894. Although this motorbike was the first of its kind it was not commercially successful, with a high purchase price and quickly improving competition.

It had a 2.5bhp, a top speed of 28mph, powered by a 1,489cc two-cylinder water-cooled four-stroke engine. Only a few hundred were made – the London Science Museum is fortunate to have one on display. A replica of the machine sold at Bonhams a few years ago for £29,900!

To celebrate this auspicious occasion the insurance bods over at Carole Nash are running a competition. Anyone who submits an insurance quote to the company will be in with the chance to win a Suzuki GSX-R600 worth over £8,500. The competition will commence on Wednesday 14th May and last 120 days – one day for every year of the motorcycle’s existence.
